The Highway 199 Yard Sale for 2020!!

The Highway 199 Yard Sale is happening in 2020, barring restrictions on travel.

Because this is a free-form event, it's all up to you if you choose to participate or not. There's no one to check in with, no fees, just put up your signs and provide a SAFE PLACE for parking.

Naturally, you should follow all public health guidelines regarding COVID and mask up as a courtesy to both sellers and customers.

Be careful out there and have fun!!

Be Careful Everyone, And Be Safe!!

The 2019 Highway 199 Yard Sale kicks off , Friday, August 16th.

Days and times will vary, depending on the sale, the vender or the event, so be flexible. The event is from Friday through Sunday.

Watch yourself on the roads, remember, a dedicated yard saler will slam on the brakes or whip a U-turn to get to a good sale, so please be careful out there on the highway and watch out for the other guy.

Sellers, you know the routine. Always watch out for your personal safety, have plenty of change, know where the nearest public restrooms and gas stations are so you can direct customers, and be sure your signs are big, bright and clearly mark your yard sale and parking area.

Good luck to you all! I hope you have a great time, make lots of money and come back next year, the third weekend in August, to do this all again!

Talk to you soon! Ruth

Safety First My Friends!

As you travel along Highway 199 looking for yard sales, please be careful.

Highway 199 is a main highway, so traffic rolls along quickly. If you see a yard sale and you can't stop, DO NOT whip a U-turn in the middle of the highway. Please select a safe place to turn around and go back.

Park in a safe location, lock your vehicle, don't leave kids/grandma/pets in a hot vehicle!

Parts of Highway 199 are winding and a bit narrow. The speed limit ranges between 45 and 55 mph outside of the towns. There are passing lanes, wait for a safe place to pass. Don't ever, ever put yourself, your family and other drivers at risk just because you're looking for a bargain.

The rest area is on the north side of the highway, so if you're heading toward Grants Pass from Crescent City, it will be a left turn and there is a turn lane. Please be super careful pulling out of the rest area, you're the only one with a stop sign!!

Please use good sense as you search for bargains -- SAFETY FIRST!

Planning a Yard Sale? Join Us for the 2019 Hwy 199 Yard Sale!

Why not plan ahead and participate in Oregon's Longest Yard Sale on US 199 over the third weekend in August? This is a completely free and voluntary, community-focused, informal event that's on the same weekend as "It's the Berries" in Kerby, Oregon, held on the third Saturday in August at 24311 Redwood Highway -- IE, right on US 199.

We do have a few suggestions to help you with sales and safety.
  1. Avoid setting up your sale on side streets. According to other Yard Sale events, most buyers don't like to leave the main road.
  2. Select a safe location with plenty of parking. Get permission from a church, business, or other commercial space with a parking lot, located right on Highway 199 and set up your sales area there. (Note: It's the Berries, in Kerby, will have spaces for rent.)
  3. Recruit your neighbors -- The more stuff that's sitting in view of the road, the more likely a dedicated yard sale aficionado will stop and browse for a while.
  4. Use BIG, brightly-colored signs with arrows pointing to your sale.
  5. Clearly mark your driveway and parking area.
  6. Set up canopies for shade and have a few chairs or a picnic table to welcome your customers. Large pitchers of free ice water and cups set out on the table will keep people shopping.
  7. Know where the nearest public restroom is available. (Yet another good reason to set up in a business' parking lot!)
  8. Keep most of your money out of sight. Only keep enough cash readily available to make change.
  9. Don't accept large bills without checking for the watermark and safety strip.
  10. Don't accept checks or traveler's checks.
Start sorting your unwanted treasures now -- August will be here before you know it!

And Thus It Begins

So, my Mom had this great idea.

Highway 199 runs from California's Highway 101 to I-5 in Oregon. Why not start an Oregon's Longest Yard Sale on 199 on the same weekend as "It's the Berries" in Kerby, scheduled for August 17th, 2013?

This is pretty informal, totally voluntary and FREE -- we're thinking of a map with businesses and special events listed for that third weekend. There's a lot of traffic on Hwy 199 in the summer and you, our friends and neighbors, should be able to take advantage of both the traffic and the insatiable urge to find that perfect item for a decor, a collection, or a library.

This is the PR point, because honestly, it's easy and Blogger is free.

Shoot me an e-mail with suggestions and your business or yard sale, including locations and times. We'll get them posted and just see what happens.

We may fumble a little at first, but let's get this party started!
